The Bajo Harbor Evaluation Methodology
Our Promise: A Transparent and Rigorous Vetting Process
The term ‘luxury’ is subjective. In the context of Komodo’s marine tourism, it can be misleading. A beautiful phinisi at the dock is only as good as its engine, its safety equipment, and its crew. That’s why every vessel and operator featured on Bajo Harbor must first pass our comprehensive, multi-stage evaluation process. This methodology is our promise of quality and transparency to you. It is how we transform the subjective idea of luxury into an objective, measurable standard of excellence. This process is managed by our expert operations team, who have years of direct experience in the Labuan Bajo maritime industry.
The Bajo Harbor Score™: A 100-Point Audit
To standardize our evaluations, we developed the Bajo Harbor Score™, a proprietary 100-point auditing system. This score is not for public display but serves as our internal benchmark. A vessel must achieve a minimum score of 85 to be considered for inclusion in our curated collection. The score is weighted across five critical categories:
1. Vessel Quality & Maintenance (30% Weighting)
This category assesses the physical condition and technical reliability of the vessel itself. Our team conducts a thorough, hands-on inspection at the Labuan Bajo harbor.
- Hull & Structure: Inspection for integrity, signs of wear, and quality of craftsmanship (especially for traditional wooden phinisis).
- Engineering & Propulsion: Review of main engine and generator service logs, visual inspection of the engine room for cleanliness and order, and verification of spare parts inventory.
- Navigation & Communication Systems: Verification of modern, functional equipment including GPS, AIS, radar, depth sounder, and VHF/SSB radios.
- Cabin & Amenity Quality: Assessment of cabin cleanliness, quality of linens, air conditioning function, en-suite bathroom condition, and overall guest comfort.
- Deck & Public Spaces: Evaluation of the condition of teak decks, lounge areas, dive decks, and sun decks for both safety and comfort.
2. Safety & Compliance (30% Weighting)
This is a non-negotiable category. We verify not just the presence of safety equipment, but its condition, certification, and the crew’s proficiency in using it.
- Life Saving Appliances: Check for SOLAS-compliant life rafts with valid service dates, sufficient life jackets for all passengers and crew, lifebuoys, and flares.
- Fire Fighting Equipment: Location and inspection of fire extinguishers, fire hoses, and smoke detectors. Review of the fire safety plan.
- First Aid & Emergency Medical: Comprehensive check of the onboard first aid kit, emergency oxygen supplies, and crew’s first aid training certification.
- Legal Documentation: Verification of all essential ship’s papers, including Gross Akte (Certificate of Registry), Surat Ukur (Tonnage Certificate), and valid passenger vessel insurance. We also confirm the vessel can obtain its Surat Persetujuan Berlayar (Port Clearance) from the KSOP Labuan Bajo for every trip.
- Crew Certification: Review of crew documents, ensuring the captain, engineer, and deckhands hold the required Indonesian maritime certifications (e.g., ANT, ATT, BST).
3. Crew & Service Quality (20% Weighting)
A vessel is only as good as its crew. We evaluate the professionalism, experience, and hospitality of the entire team.
- Captain’s Experience: Interview with the captain to assess their years of experience navigating Komodo National Park, their knowledge of local conditions, and their decision-making process.
- Crew-to-Guest Ratio: We analyze the ratio to ensure a high level of personal service and operational safety.
- Hospitality & Service Standards: Observation of crew interaction, attentiveness, and problem-solving skills during our sea trial.
- Guide & Divemaster Expertise: For dive-focused vessels, we verify PADI/SSI certifications and assess the guide’s knowledge of marine life and local dive sites.
- Culinary Program: Assessment of the chef’s skill, menu variety, food hygiene standards, and ability to cater to dietary restrictions.
4. Itinerary & Guest Experience (10% Weighting)
This category measures the quality of the journey itself.
- Itinerary Design: Evaluation of the itinerary’s pacing, uniqueness, and ability to avoid crowds while hitting key spots like Pulau Padar and Pink Beach.
- Flexibility: The crew’s ability to adapt the itinerary to weather conditions or guest preferences.
- Onboard Activities & Equipment: Quality of snorkeling gear, kayaks, paddleboards, and tenders/dinghies.
5. Sustainability Practices (10% Weighting)
We believe true luxury is responsible. We assess the operator’s commitment to protecting the environment they operate in.
- Waste Management: Verification of onboard wastewater treatment systems and a strict ‘pack-in, pack-out’ policy for solid waste.
- Single-Use Plastic Policy: Mandate for providing filtered drinking water and reusable containers, eliminating plastic bottles.
- Sourcing & Community: Preference for operators who source provisions locally in Labuan Bajo and employ crew from Flores and surrounding communities.
Our Process: From Audit to Approval
Our evaluation is a continuous cycle. It begins with an initial document review and a rigorous on-site inspection. If a vessel meets our standards, we conduct a short sea trial. Only then is it invited to be part of the Bajo Harbor collection. Crucially, we re-audit every single partner vessel annually to ensure these high standards are maintained. This exhaustive process is our commitment to you, ensuring that when you book with Bajo Harbor, you are choosing from the absolute best and safest fleet in Komodo.
